10 Tips on How a Pregnant Woman Can Prepare for Breastfeeding

I want to share ten tips on how a pregnant woman can prepare for breastfeeding.

1. DO NOT let anyone tell you it is necessary to toughen up your nipples for breastfeeding.

2. DO some reading about breastfeeding. Good choices are:

~ The Breastfeeding Book: Everything You Need to Know About Nursing Your Child from Birth Through Weaning

~ The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding: Seventh Revised Edition

~ The Nursing Mother’s Companion: Revised Edition

~ The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers: The Most Comprehensive Problem-Solving Guide to Breastfeeding from the Foremost Expert in North America, Revised & Updated Edition

3. DO NOT think you need to buy a lot of breastfeeding-related products. The great thing is all breastfeeding really requires is you and the baby!

4. DO, however, consider whether you might enjoy shopping for breastfeeding products and learn how to choose and use a breast pump safely if you will be returning to work.

5. DO NOT listen to people who pressure you to formula-feed.

6. DO attend a La Leche League meeting while you are pregnant (find a local group in the United States or other countries) and surround yourself with family, friends, and medical professionals who are supportive of breastfeeding. (If you are wondering, here’s how to pronounce “La Leche” League!)

7. DO NOT accept or keep any free formula samples “just in case.”

8. DO have the phone number of a local La Leche League leader and/or lactation consultant with you at the birth.

9. DO NOT neglect to talk to your health care providers and birth attendants about your birth plan and your desire to breastfeed.

10. DO believe in yourself! Taking these 10 steps can give you the knowledge and confidence to have a good breastfeeding experience.

How Much Folate Do You Need?

This essential B vitamin is found in beans, fruits and vegetables.

Every time the body makes new cells, it needs folate, the B vitamin that’s abundant in beans, fruits and vegetables—leafy greens in particular. Folate is essential for processing vitamin B12, and recent studies suggest it might help protect against Alzheimer’s disease, colorectal cancer and strokes. Folate also helps prevent neural-tube birth defects (NTDs), such as spina bifida. In fact, since 1998 when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration began requiring enriched cereal grain products (including white flour, pasta and white rice) to be fortified with folic acid—the form of the vitamin used in supplements—the incidence of NTDs has dropped by about 25 percent.

New Research on Folate

However, new research published last January in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition provides the first inkling that folic-acid fortification may be a problem for older people. The trouble stems from the vitamin’s close relationship with vitamin B12, which your body becomes less able to process as it ages. If you are deficient in B12—a problem more common after age 55—folic-acid megadoses can mask the early symptoms that warn of the B12 deficiency. Left undetected and thus untreated, B12 deficiency can lead to irreversible nerve and brain damage.

When Martha Savaria Morris, Ph.D., and her colleagues at Tufts University reviewed data from 1,459 elderly people (average age 70) who participated in a recent federal nutrition survey, they found that about one-quarter of them were low in vitamin B12. Within this group, those who also had the highest blood levels of folate were five times more likely to have symptoms of advanced B12 deficiency—including slower responses on a standardized test that measured ability to combine numbers with symbols—than those with lower folate levels.

Ironically, some of the worst problems were seen in health-minded folks who took supplements on top of eating a variety of folic-acid enriched foods. Breakfast cereals, some fortified with 100 percent of the daily recommendation of 400 micrograms (mcg), were a particularly potent source—especially for people who, like many of us, poured themselves a bigger serving than what was specified on the cereal box. “Some people got around 1,000 mcg of folic acid from breakfast alone,” says Morris.

Bottom Line on Folate

Unless you’re a woman of childbearing age, eating plenty of vegetables, fruits and beans is all the folate insurance you’ll likely need; 1⁄2 cup of pinto beans or 1 cup of orange juice or romaine lettuce supplies about one-fifth of the daily requirement. Without even trying, most of us meet our needs with fortified grains like cereals and rice. If you’re over 55, it’s OK to take a basic multivitamin, but don’t take a specific folic-acid supplement, says Morris. “You’re unlikely to need it and it may be harmful.” Women capable of becoming pregnant should consume 400 mcg from supplements or fortified foods in addition to intake of food folate from a varied diet.

Thumb up!
Tahniah buat DATIN SOFEA JANE, SHARIFAH SOFEA & MAYA KARIN.

BREASTFEEDING OLDER CHILDREN

Contrary to what you may hear, breastfeeding older children is more common than you might think. Some women do so in private, just because the fear the criticism of friends and family.

Extended Breastfeeding: A Growing Trend

Breastfeeding is becoming more common, especially among new mothers. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention are showing a steady growth in the number of women who begin breastfeeding their babies.

More mothers are sticking with breastfeeding longer, as well. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that babies should be breastfed at least a year, and the World Health Organization promotes nursing until at least age two. After that, both organizations suggest it should be left up to the mother and child.

With more moms becoming educated about the benefits of sustained or extended breastfeeding, it isn't surprising that more moms are also breastfeeding their children beyond the expected one or two years. Many breastfeeding moms have weathered the storms of public opinion about nursing in public, and now the media seems to have turned to breastfeeding older children.

The Benefits of Breastfeeding Older Children

Extended breastfeeding still offers older children a boost to their immune systems. Even if they are eating solid foods for their meals, nursing once or twice a day will help prevent infections and illnesses.
Studies have also shown that the longer children are nursed, the more brain power they have. Everyone wants to do the best they can for their child's intellectual development, and extended nursing provides a good solid foundation for your child's success.
Nursing an older child will help to meet their emotional and dependence needs, which can make them easier to parent in the long run. Breastfeeding toddlers usually have fewer temper tantrums and other discipline problems, because the normal frustrations young children face are soothed by a quick breastfeeding session.
Toddlers and preschoolers are exposed to a lot of new experiences that may cause anxiety and stress. The comfort they find in nursing at this age can help make them more independent and secure when they face these situations and when they get older.

Criticism from the General Public

Most mothers who nurse beyond the age of two tend to work breastfeeding other children around the rest of the day's schedule so they're nursing in the privacy of their homes. Considering how hard it has been for some mothers to breastfeed an infant in public, they usually don't want to expose their older children to the opinions they may attract from others.

It is unfortunate that in most westernized countries, extended nursing is not the norm. The average age of weaning in the rest of the world is around four years of age! This helps many children survive in some rather adverse conditions.
The westernized world has sexualized the breast to the point that many people have trouble seeing breasts used to feed infants at all.

Overcoming Bias

Fortunately for babies, many mothers are overcoming this cultural bias to provide their children with the best nutrition they can give them.
Breastfeeding Toddler If you are considering breastfeeding older children, you are not alone. While there are no studies or records of how many mothers are choosing to do this, the mothers who do notice their children are more secure.

By encourage child led weaning, the child is guaranteed to have his or her needs met on his or her own terms. They wean themselves when they are ready. Some parents of older nursing children celebrate when their child makes this decision with a party or special treat, seeing it as a milestone in the child's life.
Most extended breastfeeding children are 3, 4 or 5 years old, with a few that range a bit older. Most mothers who practice extended breastfeeding find that the older the child is, the fewer times they need to nurse.

when breastfeeding older children, some may only nurse when they are upset, which could be as rarely as once a week or even once a month. The length of the nursing session is much shorter than for an infant as well. The child is able to get the comfort he or she needs in just a few minutes. It is amazing to see how much it can affect a child's self-esteem just to have that option open as they go through toddler and preschool ages. As more mothers choose nurse their older children, it will become more accepted and normalized to the mainstream public.

Really Good Drinking / PENYUSUAN YANG BETUL

This baby is drinking very well at the breast. The pause in the chin as the baby opens his mouth to the maximum, just before closing his mouth, indicates his mouth is filling up with milk; the longer the pause, the more milk the baby is taking in. Thus, it is obvious that the advice to feed the baby 20 minutes (10 minutes, 30 minutes, whatever) on each makes no sense. A baby who drinks as this baby drinks for 20 minutes on the first side could easily refuse to take the second side since he would be full. Even a shorter period of time drinking as he does could easily fill him up.

HELPING YOUR CHILD EXPRESS EMOTIONS

HELPING YOUR CHILD EXPRESS EMOTIONS

Young as they are, children are still capable of feeling a wide range and variety of emotions.

But because of their young age, they do not know what they are feeling and how to express it in a constructive way that they can be understood.

The right level of guidance could help your child express his emotions without having the need to get each other all frustrated and worn out.

The best way to help your child express himself is to start early. Babies and toddlers still do not have enough vocabulary to express what they are feeling.

One way to help them is to use your child’s love for pictures. Every time he’s feeling an emotion, show him a picture that corresponds to that emotion and describe it for him.

Best way to know what he’s feeling is to watch out for cues. An angry baby will frown and scream, throw toys or anything he can get his hands on. If he’s doing so, say “You look pretty angry today.

What’s the matter, can you tell mommy the reason?” Show him a picture of an angry baby and describe the emotion.

Your baby or toddler will babble it out until he gets his emotions out of his system or until you figure out what’s causing the emotion and help him do something about it.
